Spanish banking giant BBVA is switching its 110,000 staff to use Google's range of enterprise software.

The deal is the biggest that the search giant has signed with one company for its cloud-computing services, where software is offered as a service via the internet.

Military planes take off for Spain carrying 17 tons of silver recovered from 1804 shipwreck

A 17-ton haul of silver coins, lost for two centuries in the wreck of a sunken Spanish galleon, began its journey back to its home country on Friday after the deep-sea explorers who lifted it to the surface lost their claim to ownership.

Two Spanish military C-130 cargo planes took off after noon from a Florida Air Force base with 594,000 silver coins and other artifacts aboard. They were packed into the same white plastic buckets in which they were brought to the U.S. by Tampa, Fla.-based Odyssey Marine Exploration in May 2007.

Rafa Nadal has been voted Spain’s favorite sportsman of the year in the IMG Ranking (73% of votes compared to 68% in 2011), followed by Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso (32.6% in 2011 and 27.6% in 2010) and Pau Gasol (32.1% in 2011 and 28.6% in 2010). The global sports and media company conducted the study through 500 telephone surveys in Madrid and Barcelona in December 2010.

Washington, D.C. – GALA’s crowdpleasing and acclaimed flamenco festival is here for its seventh year withHonorary Producers Lynne and Joseph Horning! Fuego Flamenco VII is an exploration of the diversity and depth offlamenco and its contemporary expressions. This year’s attractions include a United States premiere with the sultry Ana González appearing with the José Barrios and Company from Madrid, and a world premiere by Edwin Aparicio and the FlamencoAparicio Dance Company from Washington, DC that features only male flamenco dancers from Spain and the United States. In addition, there willbe free lecture-demonstrations on flamenco for children and families. Thefestival is made possible with generous support from Lynne and Joseph Horning, theNational Endowment for the Arts, the Embassy of Spain in Washington,DC, and Spain’s Ministry of Culture.

Fuego Flamenco VII, part of GALA’sArteAmericA series in collaboration with the Washington Performing Arts Society(WPAS), kicks off at GALA Theatre, 3333 14^th Street, NW, onThursday, November 17 at 8 pm with the return of José Barrios and Company, presented by Madrid’s Fundación ConservatorioFlamenco Casa Patas , in a new piece,Flamenco Algarabía/I Refuse to Stop Laughing. This innovativework is choreographed by José Barriosand features artist Ana González underthe musical direction of Isaac Muñoz.Performances continue on Friday, November 18, Saturday, November 19 at 8 pm,and Sunday, November 20 at 3 pm. FlamencoAlgarabía/I Refuse to Stop Laughingshowcases the universality of dance and music as it transcends language andculture. “The process of developing this piece has been one of constantinquiry, exploration and joy as musicians and dancers of different styles andgenres have come together to create a unique work.” comments Barrios. “It wasborn from my desire to keep smiling in the face of adversity and to learn andgrow from those experiences.” The show features dancers Ana González and JoséBarrios; singers Gema Caballeroand Juan Debel; guitarists Isaac Muñoz andDavid Durán; and Wafir S. Gibril on accordion, lute andpercussion.

José Barrios (Dancer, Choreographer) first appeared at GALA tosold-out houses and critical acclaim in 2003 in Básicamente Flamenco. Last year he appeared in Fuego Flamenco VI atGALA with the United Statespremiere of Por si acaso amanece. He studiedflamenco in Cordoba, Sevilleand Madrid with such masters as Manolo Marín,Domingo Ortega, and La China.He has toured to Japan, Egypt, and Morocco,and appeared throughout the United States with the Boston Flamenco Ballet. Healso has performed with several other companies, including those of Blanca delRey, Suite Española, José Porcel and María Pagés. He has choreographed for theBoston Flamenco Ballet, the María Pagés Company, and the Parque España in Japan. He was aspecial guest artist at the VI Festival de Cante Flamenco in Miami,and last year toured to Seattle, Boston and Panamawith Por si acaso amanece.

Ana González (Dancer), a native of Cádiz,Spain, is making her firstappearance in Washington.She made her debut as a soloist in Unpoquito más allá at the Sala Central Lechera in Cádiz and toured with DavidMorales in El Indiano to Argentina, Uruguay,Chile and Talca. Most recently, she was featured in A Posteriori at the Teatro Padrillo andthe Teatro Lara in Madrid. As amember of the Sara Baras Dance Company, she appeared in Sensaciones, Cádiz y la Isla, Sueños, Juana la Loca, Marina Pineda,Sabores, and Carmen. She also has performed in Madrid tablaos such as ParqueEspaña, Casa Patas, El Café de Chinitas, Corral de la Morería, and La TablasMadrid. She studied with numerous renowned instructors including InmaculadaGarcía, Pilar Ogalla, Concha, Eva la Yerbabuena, Antonio el Pipa, DomingoOrtega and Enrique Pantoja, among others.

Isaac Muñoz(MusicalDirector, Guitar), who was musical director for José Barrios’s Por si acaso amanece in Fuego Flamenco VI,has been musical director for the companies of Jorge del Pino, Marco AntonioMedina, and María Pagés, among others. Healso has toured internationally with the María Pages Company, and has composedmusic for Parque España in Japan,television, and other prominent artists. He has performed at such majorfestivals as Guitarra de Córdoba Festival, Granada Music and Dance Festival,and Flamenco Sevilla Biennal. He is the recipient of several awards, includingFirst Prize in the Jóvenes Flamenco Competition and First Prize at the Guitarrade Concierto Campos de Guitarra.

David Durán (Guitar) appeared with José Barrios in lastyear’s U.S.tour of Por si acaso amanece. He hasperformed with many artists, including Pitingo, Antonio Márquez, MaríaCarrasco, and Isabel Pantoja, with whom he also toured to

Russia

in 2009. In addition totouring with various companies, Mr. Durán performs regularly in Madrid tablaos such as El Corral de la Pacheca, Lastablas, Torres Bermejas, and Florida Park. He studied with thewell-known flamenco artists Pepe Núñez and Aquilino Jiménez “El Entri.” Mr.Durán is also a scholar of history and music science in Madrid.

Juan Debel (Singer) has performed in many flamenco festivals andappeared in Arcángel’s Desde la tierra,on the album Azul, and performed withEstrella Morente. Among his songs are Septiembre,No me olvidaré de ti and Retales, which he performs in his ownproductions. Mr. Debel also appeared in Porsi acaso amanece with José Barrios as part of Fuego Flamenco VI and theCasa Patas tour throughout the United States.

Gema Caballero (Singer) began singing at a young age in her native Granada. She has workedwith such renowned flamenco artists as Estrella Morente and Marina Heredia, andappeared with the Compañía de Danza SuiteEspañola and the Compañía Rafaela Carrasco. As a soloist, she has appeared inconcert in Granada, Madrid,Cataluña, and Paris. This is her first appearance in Washington, DC.

Wafir S. Gibril (Accordion, Lute, Percussion) is a native of Kurdubanand has played accordion for several bands, including Abudul Ziz, Almubarak,Mohammad Al Amin, and Abdul Karm Al Kably. Since moving to Spain 10 yearsago, he has performed with several music groups. He also formed La Banda Negrawith his sister, Rasha.

Casas Patas is a world-renowned Madridtablao, hosting some of the best and most authentic flamenco in Spain. Famous groups and new talent sometimes sharethe same stage to create memorable productions. The Fundación ConservatorioFlamenco Casa Patas grew out of this club and today sponsors workshops,seminars, and exhibitions promoting the art of flamenco.

Flamenco en Familia, free family workshops in flamenco zapateo,castanets, and fans, takes place on Saturday, November 26 in two sessions from11 am to 12:30 pm and 2 pm to 3:30 pm at the GALA Theatre. The lecturedemonstrations will be led by members of the Spanish Dance Society.

Thethird and final weekend of FuegoFlamenco VII presents the world premiere of Flamenco Men, choreographed, directed, and performed by Edwin Aparicio with featured artists Sergio Aranda from Malaga, Spain, NorbertoChamizo from Granada, Spain and CarlosMenchaca from San Antonio, Texas. Performances are on Friday, December 2 and Saturday,December 3 at 8 pm and Sunday, December 4 at 3 pm.

Flamenco Men explores the masculine energy and style of flamencoand features the unique qualities and stylistic range of the four accomplishedflamenco male artists who are featured. With their fiery footwork and musculargrace, Aparicio, Aranda, Chamizo and Menchaca promise to raise the roof at GALATheatre.

Other artists performing in Flamenco Men are singer Amparo Heredia “La Repompilla” from Malaga, Spain;singer Javier Orozco “Yiyi” from Barcelona,Spain; guitarist Richard Marlow from Washington,DC; and cellist Gonzalo Grau from Caracas, Venezuela.

Edwin Aparicio (Dancer/Choreographer) who is the co-founder and ArtisticManager of GALA’s Fuego Flamenco Festival, was featured in Dance Magazine’sannual “25 Artists to Watch” list in 2009 and has been described by critics as“the most amazing dancer seen in years” with his “hellfire footwork.” Aninternationally acclaimed artist, he has shared the stage with renowned dancerssuch as Carmela Greco, Chuscales, and Silverio Heredia, among others. Mr.Aparicio studied flamenco in Spainwith La Tati and Tomás de Madrid, and in 2001 made his flamenco debut at CasaPatas in Madrid.He performed with the Washington National Opera under the direction of PlácidoDomingo at the Kennedy Center, and with theBaltimore Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Marion Alsop. Mr. Apariciotoured the United Stateswith Reynaldo Rincόn’s Romeria Flamenca, was the featured artist in 2002 and2005 at the Chicago Flamenco Festival, and appeared at the 2004 and 2005Flamenco in the Sun Annual Festival in Miamiwith renowned artists Belén Maya, Pastora Galván, Pedro Cortés, and Jose Luis Rodríguez.In 2005, he also performed with “Jόvenes Flamenco” as a soloist and a companymember at the Centro Cultural de San Blás in Madrid, and was the choreographer for Yerma by Federico García Lorca, GALA’spremiere production at its new theater. Mr. Aparicio has directed andchoreographed for several national productions, including Intimo with Carmela Greco and Entresueñofeaturing La Truco. Mr. Aparicio is a faculty member of the WashingtonSchool of Ballet and regularly conducts flamenco classes throughout the country.He was nominated for the 2010 Metro DC Dance Award for Outstanding IndividualPerformance.

Sergio Aranda(Dancer) is appearing for the first time in Washington, DC.A native of Malaga, Spain,he appeared at the Bienal de Flamenco in a production directed by Paco Mora, atthe Cumbre Flamenco Festival in Madridwith El Grillo, and in Dos Generationswith Chano Lobator, La Cañeta de Málaga, and El Carrete. He also has touredwith María Juncal to Holland and appeared in Málaga en Flamenco Show at the SadlersWells Theatre in London.

NorbertoChamizo (Dancer) has performed as a soloist with the Compañía Flamenca Tomás de Madrid,with which he toured extensively throughout Russia,Ukraine, Belarus, and the Baltic States. He also performed in Greece,Italy, Egypt, and Portugal as a soloist with Compañía de Madrid. In2002, Mr. Chamizo formed his own company debuting with Jaleo, his first work as a director and choreographer. Mr. Chamizoalso has performed at the legendary tablaos Casa Patas with the Carmela Grecoand Café de Chinas with Peppa Carrasco.

Carlos Menchaca (Dancer) was a member of theGuadalupe Dance Company in San Antonio and hasworked with Yjastros: the American Flamenco Repertory Company in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He studied flamenco, Mexican folk and Spanishclassical dance in San Antonio.He later studied at the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts in New Mexico, where he is currently aninstructor

The Society of Spain hosts again its annual concert.

The theme this year is ROMANTIC SPAIN, and will featurecompositions by Enrique Granados and Manuel de Falla, in addition to theSpanish Rhapsody, by Franz Liszt, to commemorate the 200 anniversary of hisbirth.

The acclaimed pianist Carlos Cesar Rodriguez, who last yeardelighted the audience with the Suite Iberia, by Isaac Albéniz, will play alsothis time, at the United Church, in Foggy Bottom, 1920 G St. N.W.

The program includes GOYESCAS and EL PELELE, by Granados, and ELAMOR BRUJO by Manuel de Falla.

A musician of brilliance and versatility, Carlos César Rodríguezhas gained recognition as a virtuoso pianist who not only generates excitementin the Hispanic and Spanish repertoire but also displays an extraordinary flairfor Mozart, the romantics and the avant-garde scores.

Mr. Rodríguez has won acclaim moreover as music director ofMozart operas and Zarzuelas (Spanish operas), and as a composer, arranger, andimproviser of ballets, Spanish dance scores, and Latin-Jazz/Pop compositions

Carlos César Rodríguez made his recital debut in his native Venezuelaat age5 and made his orchestral debut as soloist at age 11. At age 21 he made his Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall debut. “Renovando el Sueño Americano por Nuestra Prosperidad", un enfoque en empleos y la economía

WASHINGTON, DC – La administración del Presidente Obama continúa su celebración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana esta semana, con un enfoque centrado en empleos y la economía. Con más de 50 millones en Estados Unidos continental, y otros 4 millones en Puerto Rico, los hispanos ya no se encuentran en tan sólo unos pocos estados, sino en todo el país, según las cifras del censo. Como el grupo minoritario más grande y de más rápido crecimiento en Estados Unidos, la capacidad de la comunidad hispana de prosperar es vital para el futuro de nuestro país, y crítico para nuestros esfuerzos de superar al resto del mundo en educación, innovación y construcción.

Conforme a este espíritu, el tema del Mes de la Herencia Cultural Hispana de 2011 es "Renovando el Sueño Americano". El enfoque de esta semana sobre "nuestra prosperidad" surge al mismo tiempo que el Presidente remite su plan para impulsar el crecimiento económico y la creación de empleos al Comité Conjunto, un plan que sienta las bases para prosperidad de los años venideros. Partiendo de la base del progreso ya alcanzado y el plan del Presidente para seguir adelante, la Administración celebrará una diversidad de actividades esta semana en la Casa Blanca y en todo el país, a través de la Administración de Negocios Pequeños y el Departamento de Comercio.

Adicionalmente, la Casa Blanca destacará a hispanos de toda la administración que hacen una contribución hacia la visión del Presidente para ganar el futuro con un enfoque en la economía en un mensaje de blog diario como parte de la serie de "Renovación del Sueño Estadounidense" en http://www.whitehouse.gov/hispanic y en español en http://www.whitehouse.gov/espanol.

Hispanic Heritage Month Activities for the Week of September 19 – September 23rd:

“Renewing the American Dream for Our Prosperity,” a Focus on Jobs and the Economy

WASHINGTON, DC – The Obama Administration continues its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month this week with a focus on jobs and the economy. Numbering more than 50 million on the mainland and another 4 million in Puerto Rico, Hispanics are no longer found in a handful of states but all across America, according to the latest census numbers. As the largest and fastest growing minority group in America, the Hispanic community’s ability to thrive is vital to the future of our nation and is critical to our out-educating, out-innovating, and out-building the rest of the world.

In this spirit, the theme of Hispanic Heritage Month 2011 is “Renewing the American Dream.” This week’s focus on “our prosperity” comes as the President sends his plan to jumpstart economic growth and job creation to the Joint Committee, a plan that lays the foundation for prosperity for years to come. Building on the progress already made and the President’s plan for moving forward, the Administration will host a number of activities this week at the White House and across the country through the Small Business Administration, and the Department of Commerce.

In addition, the White House will feature Hispanics from throughout the Administration who are contributing to the President’s vision for winning the future with a focus on the economy in a daily blog post as part of the “Renewing the American Dream” series at http://www.whitehouse.gov/hispanic.

Para los españoles y los amantes de España, Santa Fe, situada al fin del Camino Real que empezaba en Ciudad de México, es un lugar especial: aunque no sea la ciudad más antigua, porque la primera que España fundó fue San Agustín en la Florida, es la más española que podemos encontrar hoy en el país.

Los residentes de Nuevo México acostumbran a decir que ellos no han venido a Estados Unidos, sino que Estados Unidos ha ido a Nuevo México, pues muchos son descendientes de los colonos españoles que la fundaron en 1608 .El nombre de Nuevo México no proviene de que sea una nueva colonia mexicana, sino de que los conquistadores creían que sería "un nuevo México" en cuanto a riquezas y recursos naturales.

No se incorporó a México hasta 1821, después de la guerra de independencia, pero formó parte tan sólo tres décadas del país vecino, pues en 1853 pasó a control de Estados Unidos y se convirtió en estado en 1912. De esa historia les ha quedado una clara herencia española, que no se refleja solamente en que es el estado del país con mayor porcentaje hispano (46%), sino también en su arquitectura y costumbres. Gran parte de la población es bilingüe y es frecuente que muchos actos públicos se desarrollen en los dos idiomas.

La ciudad de Santa Fe es un auténtico centro turístico durante el verano, en buena parte a causa de la ópera que se puede disfrutar al aire libre, en un teatro abierto desde el que se pueden ver las espectaculares montañas de la sierra Sangre de Cristo, nombre que deben al intenso color púrpura y rojo la puesta del sol. Su clima seco y su luz intensa le dan una luminosidad muy apreciada por los artistas que han elegido Santa Fe como su hogar, siguiendo el ejemplo de la famosa pintora George O´Keefe.

La ópera empieza cuando ya anochece, pero es frecuente que muchos de sus asistentes vayan horas antes a cenar allí para disfrutar de la maravillosa vista que los rodea al acabar el día.

Aunque la mayor parte de los visitantes de Santa Fe acuden de los estados vecinos del oeste, como California, Arizona o Colorado, la ciudad recibe turistas de todo el país y del mundo, que aprovechan las horas del día para recorrer este estado en que conviven las tres culturas de diversas naciones indias junto con la española y la angloamericana. Durante todo el verano hay diferentes ferias, romerías y exposiciones.

Las cinco obras que la Opera de Santa Fe presenta en los próximos meses de julio y agosto son La Boheme, Faust, Griselda, The Last Savage y Wozzeck.

Placido Domingo termina su etapa en la Opera de Washington

Plácido Domingo termina su etapa al frente de la Washington National Opera.

Desde el viernes,6 de mayo, Placido Domingo ha dando sus últimos recitales como director de la Washington National Opera, en dos roles totalmente diferentes.

Aunque a Domingo se le conoce principalmente por sus roles de tenor, ha sido tradicional que dirija cada temporada una ópera en Washington. Ahora, se trata de la ópera bufa Don Pasquale, que se presentará en los días 13 a 27 de mayo. El tenor español Antonio Gandía tiene el rol de Ernesto.

Antes, pero, tiene el rol de Orestes en Iphigénie en Tauride , entre los días 6 y 28 de mayo. Se le puede escuchar de una forma distinta a la que nos tiene habituados, pues no es un rol de tenor, sino de barítono. Es algo que no debe sorprender a quienes conocen la trayectoria de Domingo, pues originalmente era un barítono que se “convirtió” a tenor, con un éxito indiscutible.

En este caso, la producción de la ópera viene de España, de la Opera de Oviedo, dirigida por Emili Sagi.

Iphigénie en Tauride

Washington National Opera (WNO), under the leadership of General Director Plácido Domingo, presents Christoph Willibald Gluck's masterpiece Iphigénie en Tauride in eight performances, May 6 to 28 at the Kennedy Center Opera House. Starring soprano Patricia Racette as Iphigénie and world-renowned tenor Plácido Domingo as Oreste, Gluck's mythological tale is led by William Lacey in this powerful and suspenseful production from Opera de Oviedo. An acclaimed singing-actress, American soprano Patricia Racette makes her role debut as the eponymous Iphigénie

Maestro Domingo sings Iphigénie's long-lost brother, Oreste, one of the star tenor's recent forays into the baritone repertoire. His Oreste with the Metropolitan Opera was hailed as "dignified, inward, [and] tragic" (Opera News) and "enthusiastically operatic" (Washington Post). In his final appearance as WNO's General Director, Maestro Domingo will sing Oreste in all performances.

The all-star cast also features Italian bass-baritone Simone Alberghini, last seen in Washington as Figaro in 2009's The Barber of Seville, as the cruel and savage King Thoas of Tauris; and American tenor Shawn Mathey as Oreste's faithful friend Pylade. A story of love, sacrifice, and fate, Iphigénie en Tauride is based on the ancient Greek playwright Euripides' play of the same name.

The opera tells the tale of Iphigénie, saved by the goddess Diana only to be held captive on the island of Tauris to serve as the goddess' high priestess. Wracked by omens of his downfall and suspicious of all who come to the island, King Thoas orders Iphigénie to sacrifice two newly arrived strangers. Unbeknownst to Iphigénie, one of the strangers is her own brother Oreste, who has left Greece after murdering their mother Clytemnestra, herself a murderous force. Iphigénie is tormented by dreams of her family's bloody past and desperately struggles to save the two prisoners. As the hour of sacrifice draws near, mistaken identity, a battle, and the intervention of the gods ensues in this powerful and dramatic work.

A seminal work in the history of opera, Iphigénie en Tauride is considered Gluck's masterpiece. Composed in 1779,. Iphigénie en Tauride is today the most performed of Gluck's operas and admired for its haunting, moving melodies.

Leading the WNO Orchestra and Chorus is William Lacey, who won high praise when he led WNO's Tamerlano in 2008. Directing his production from Spain's Opera de Oviedo is Emilio Sagi, with a production team that includes set design by Luis Antonio Suarez; costumes by Pepa Ojaguren; lighting by Eduardo Bravo; and choreography by Diniz Sanchez.

WNO's 2010-11 season concludes with Donizetti's classic opera buffa Don Pasquale. When the old Don Pasquale plans to marry, yet threatens to disinherit his young nephew Ernesto should he also take a wife, Ernesto, his fiancé Norina, and their friend Dr. Malatesta put into play a hilarious plot of deception designed to teach Don Pasquale a lesson and persuade a change of heart. American bass-baritone James Morris makes his WNO debut and role debut as the blustery Don Pasquale. Russian sopranos Ekaterina Siurina and Julia Novikova make their WNO debuts as Norina, and American baritone Dwayne Croft returns to WNO to sing Dr. Malatesta. Spanish tenor Antonio Gandia sings the role of Ernesto, as does 2009 Operalia winner and Russian tenor Alexey Kudrya in his WNO debut. Leon Major directs this production from New York City Opera that draws on commedia dell'arte traditions, and Maestro Plácido Domingo and Israel Gursky share the podium.

The Post-Classical Ensemble's Celebration of Composer Lou Harrison

Lou Harrison (1917-2003) is a great California composer whose music is little heard in the Eastern U.S. The Post-Classical Ensemble is celebrating his life and work through a festival set to start on February 26th.

The festival's main concert, at Lisner Auditorium on March 5th, features a range of Harrison's work, including compositions for the gamelan, the Indonesian percussion orchestra, but its highlight for the conductor, Angel Gil-Ordonez, is Harrison's piano concerto, composed from 1983 to 1985. To him, it's one of the masterpieces of the 20th century.

Concierto Andalouse and Gala Flamenca

The Pan American Symphony Orchestra (PASO) presents the U.S. premiere of Suite Andalouse by world renowned oud (Arabic lute) player, Marcel Khalifé, with Bachar Khalifé on riq (Arabic tambourine) on March 12, 2011 at the George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium.

In Suite Andalouse, Khalife evokes a shared past with Spain that goes back to the ninth century, when the Andalusian courts were major world centers of learning in the sciences, philosophy, literature and music. This work includes both the traditions of early Arabic-Andalusian music and of the later 19th century southern Andalusian gypsy flamenco music.

The concert opens with Danza Española from the opera, La Vida Breve by Manuel de Falla, which demonstrates de Falla’s strong preference for the traditional Andalusian cante jondo of gypsy flamenco music. Isaac Albeniz's masterpiece, Suite Iberia, follows, with Triana, and El Albaicin, a melancholy vision of the gypsy district of Granada. PASO also performs three pieces from Albeniz's Suite Española, based on the musical form of the dance from Córdoba (nocturna), Asturias (leyenda), and Granada (serenade).

Carmela Greco, daughter of the celebrated Spanish dancer, Jose Greco, brings together with Eliezer Truco Pinillos, Pepa Molina, and Maria Juncal from Spain, an expressive, dramatic authenticity to the performance.

Opening of Picasso: Guitars 1912-1914 Exhibit at MoMA

Sometime between October and December 1912, Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) made a guitar. Cobbled together from cardboard, paper, string, and wire, materials that he cut, folded, threaded, and glued, Picasso’s silent instrument resembled no sculpture ever seen before. In 1914 the artist reiterated his fragile papery construction in a more fixed and durable sheet metal form.

These two Guitars, both gifts from the artist to MoMA, bracket an incandescent period of material and structural experimentation in Picasso’s work. Picasso: Guitars 1912–1914 explores this breakthrough moment in 20th-century art, and the Guitars’ place within it.

The exhibit is made up of 70 smallish, thematically related objects borrowed from hither and yon: paintings, drawings, collages and combinations thereof, along with two renowned sculptures, one seen complete for the first time since it left Picasso’s studio after his death.

NBA Washington Wizards Basketball Games - Spanish Heritage Nights

Our good friend Alfonso Aramendia is putting together a group of Spaniards and "Friends of Spain" to attend upcoming Wizards games at Verizon Center to cheer both the Wizards and our Spanish basketball stars playing in the NBA.

The Washington Wizards will host its first Spanish Heritage Night on Friday, November 19 at 7:00 pm when the Memphis Grizzlies come to Verizon Center. Grizzlies player and Spanish National, Marc Gasol is scheduled to play in the contest. Throughout the game, elements recognizing Spanish culture will be featured.

Members of the Spanish community will participate in a fan tunnel and greet players as they run to the court. Special Spanish guests will be recognized throughout the night for their contribution to Spanish Heritage Night.

AFI presents the 23rd AFI European Union Film Showcase, a selection of new films from EU member states including film festival award winners, box office hits and U.S. premieres.

There should definitely be some worthwhile movies here.

The two from Spain are "Three Days and the Family" (Tres dies amb la família) and "Me Too" (Yo, también). The first one will air on Sunday, November 14th at 1:00 p.m. and Tuesday, November 16th at 8:00 p.m. and Me too on Friday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 13th at 5:30 p.m.

The event runs from Nov. 4th-23rd at the AFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring, MD.

Great win by Spain's 23-year-old Beatriz Recari of the CVS/pharmacy LPGA a few days ago. Talented and good looking! Go Spain!

Recari's $165,000 first-place check moves her to the 37th slot on the LPGA money list after she came into the tournament having won just $51,591.

Ms. Recari is from Pamplona, a city many of us at The Society of Spain love.
